Fort Future

In Christ. Bearing Fruit. Impacting Generations.

The Recap

This Fort Future Campaign, was a response to the Lord’s leading, to complete critical projects with the vision of bearing fruit for future generations. In order for Fort to continue and amplify its impact for God’s glory, Fort’s main campus had many aging and inadequate facilities which, unless addressed, would limit the future influence for generations to come.

Relive the journey from an unexpected land exchange, prayer, fundraising, planning, and project completion! Thank you Fort Family for your generosity to make the following story possible. You are impacting lives for Christ for generations to come!

Improbable Land Exchange

2017 – Fort exchanged twenty acres of land with the DNR, giving Fort land adjacent to the canteen, dining hall and stables. This created the impetus to consider future of camp in light of ministering to the next generation of campers and many buildings in need of repair.

Input and Prayer

2018 – When the Fort Family was engaged, campers provided over 1,200 points of input! Fort developed an initial Campus Master Plan – Fort’s first in decades. All of this was covered in prayer: A Fort Future prayer team was established, board-led prayer, and 30 days of prayer with staff and the board.

Called Staff & Campaign Launched

2020-2021 – With the pandemic changing how we do camp, it created the need to do all of camp outdoors. Campers said let us continue worshipping in God’s creation which led to accelerating the amphitheater project. Likewise, outdoor dining reduced the stress on the dining room, and a new facility was deemed a future need. The Lord raised up critical leaders in construction (2018), architecture (2020), and fundraising (2021). Construction costs accelerated rapidly and we finalize plans for eleven critical projects and the $9.6M campaign began!

Donations, Volunteers, Progress!

2021 – 2026

  • 887 Fort Friends pledged and gave to support the Fort Future!
  • Over 4,000 Volunteer Hours contributed for Fort Future projects!
  • Staff funded through missionary support provided $1,050,000 of labor which is a cost, much below market value, that was not funded through the campaign.
  • Each project was planned with ministry in mind, prayed over, and completed – or will be underway soon!

Stewardship

It is our desire to steward each dollar contributed well. With that in mind, we consider the needs of campers and a relational ministry with 40 weeks of campers each year, 4-5 months of snow on the ground (and load limits), staff and volunteer availability, and opportunities for contributed services. Please review your investment in Fort’s Future – you are impacting lives for Christ for generations to come. Your feedback and comments are welcome!

Master Plan Design + Assessment – Consultant hired in 2018, the first time in decades something like this was done!

  • Cabin Renovations
  • Amphitheater
  • Operations Annex
  • The Waters – Summer Staff & Volunteer Housing
  • Stockade 80
  • Happy Day – Creative Arts & Nature Classroom
  • Infrastructure – New well pumphouse, mechanical building, and fiber optics
  • Stables – Ready for campers in 2027!

Fort Future Projects Coming Soon –

  • Trails Expansion – 2027
    • In partnership with the DNR, this project will expand Fort’s trail system by adding summer hiking trails and boardwalk access to Lost Lake – a place for quiet contemplation and Nature Center classes – while also extending existing horse and ski trails. When complete, the master plan will bring the total system from 10 miles to approximately 16 miles.
  • Nature Playground – 2027
    • A new nature-based playground nestled among the trees in the heart of camp will use natural elements to inspire wonder, creativity, and connection to God’s creation for a variety of ages and abilities.

Septic – In 2019, Fort presented a need to expand our septic capacity, as existing systems were deemed insufficient to support planned Fort Future construction projects. Subsequent engineering studies revealed the cost of a comprehensive new system, would significantly exceed the amounts raised. Engineering and design costs were $46,000. During this time, we also conducted enhanced water flow and septic analysis and in partnership with local authorities were able to complete plans to construct Fort Future facilities without adding septic capacity.

Building Maintenance Projects – While tackling large building projects, Fort also pursued smaller building additions, maintenance, infrastructure, and upgrades to program activities. Some of the highlights include:

  • Infrastructure: Firewood storage building, on-site garbage compactor system, office space expansion.
  • Maintenance and Property Enhancements:
    • Bear’s Den – rebuilt railings
    • Gathering Place – new stage lighting and sound upgrades, stone stairway from paver patio to Lowlands
    • Inn Renovation – new roof, insulation, drywall, and decking
    • Moonbeam – interior upgrades and new roof
    • Dining Hall Renovations – carpet, sound tiles, deck awning, and new roof
    • Dining Hall Equipment – new ovens, smoker, grill/griddle, and sound system
    • Operations – maintenance van and skid loader purchased

Property Acquisitions: In 2020, Fort purchased 69 acres and frontage on Frick Lake adjacent to Adventure Outpost.

Campaign Fundraising, Administrative, and Events: Fort managed the campaign internally as it was important to do the campaign the “Fort way,” which also saved significant costs from use of outside fundraising firms.

Together we can impact future generations!

Thank You!
