As Fort Future Projects Nears Completion- Steve Lehe to Return to Indiana

A note from Todd Leyden, Executive Director

Steve with his wife Jill and their second daughter, Emma

God speaks through His timing

“Great is the Lord, and most worthy to be praised, His greatness no one can fathom.” Psalm 145:3

In February 2017, Fort finalized an improbable land exchange with the Wisconsin DNR.

The month before, Steve Lehe volunteered for Zionsville Fellowship’s Great White North weekend. Over that weekend, he shared with Craig Holmquist (Director of Ministry Partnerships) that the Spirit was leading Him to consider joining Fort’s staff.

Steve’s professional skill set, building large scale projects, was what the Lord needed for Fort’s next season of ministry.

When Steve arrived in spring of 2018, he famously shared with me, “You know I can do more than hammer a nail.” Steve’s arrival coincided with our efforts to develop a comprehensive master plan for main camp. Eight years later, as we construct our last major Fort Future project, the barn, Steve and Jill sense the call to return to Indiana and reunite with their family, friends, and church community.

Steve has been working diligently on the new Stables project.
For Steve, service is not simply an action… it’s an attitude.

Countless lives impacted… now and for years to come

We are thankful for Steve’s leadership as he, Billy (Campus Architect), and Nikolai (Construction Superintendent) have worked alongside countless volunteers and vendors to construct some wonderful buildings which will serve campers for generations to come. Equally important was Steve’s desire to minister to others during the building process. With this mindset he has led numerous projects, such as the cabin expansion project, Amphitheater, Operations Annex, staff and volunteer housing (The Waters), Stockade 80 expansion, infrastructure (water, fiber, mechanical), Happy Day Creative Arts Center, and now the stables. We expect the new barn to be under roof by June, with Nikolai leading the interior completion for camper use in the summer of 2027.

Jill has faithfully served in many roles, including leading efforts for the flowers. Their daughters, Ellen and Emma, have served on summer staff.

Steves love for his work is evident to all.
Thanks to Jill, Main Camp has been blooming!
Beyond building, Steve is an accomplished Wrangler’s cook!
Steve has led projects with countless volunteers, faithfully pouring into each one.

Please join me in thanking Steve and Jill for their immeasurable contributions to Fort Wilderness. The Lehes anticipate returning to Indiana in June and will return to camp as campers and volunteers as often as possible.

Eternally grateful for your partnership,

Todd
